Passion, anger and commitment in an eternally rolling procession

Fúria is Portuguese for anger, enthusiasm, passion, inspiration. Such are the emotions that pervade the eponymous performance by Brazilian choreographer Lia Rodrigues. All sacred cows are knocked down in a baroque performance, an interpretation of the feelings of the oppressed in the favelas, the slums of Brazil. Fúria is a rhythmically pounding, eternally rolling procession that captures the imagination and goes far beyond it.

Fúria

With her powerful, energetic dance language, Lia Rodrigues creates an intense communality out of sometimes violent – physical as well as psychological – clashes. One scene passes almost imperceptibly into the next, and each time the dancers appear in a different guise. Every now and then, an individual, duo or trio breaks away from the group, only to disappear into the crowd again. Each image, character or creature evokes associations that then dissolve as in a dream.

A series of impressive images pass by: queens riding tigers, men turning into women or vice versa, Amazonian warriors, a jumble of colours, bodies and body parts. Characters are constantly changing shape and gender.

Lia Rodrigues

Brazilian choreographer Rodrigues, who was awarded the Prince Claus Prize for her oeuvre in 2014, is internationally regarded as one of the great dance innovators. From the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, she conquered the world. In 1990, she started a festival for contemporary dance in Rio. In 2009, she also founded a dance company, and in 2011, she set up a dance school in one of the largest favelas, where students can take free dance lessons. Rodrigues has put Brazilian contemporary dance on the international map. Her performance Encantado, the sequel to Fúria, can also be seen at Julidans.

Rodrigues: "For the creation of Fúria we built a collection of images of the world and of Brazil; images of the present and the past, images of joy, pain, violence, love.

-|-
We painted a large mural in the Centro de Artes da Maré. And we started to work on the coherence of these images, placing them in relation to each other, looking for colours, environments, textures, to create living images."

She challenges the audience to let go of fixed ideas about identity by constantly throwing them off their guard. Her dance pieces are committed and poetic. Fúria was created at the time of the Brazilian elections in 2018. She wanted to awaken the anger, the strength to resist, the passion to create. Rodrigues and her dancers managed to create something of great beauty and power out of that anger.
