From a grand gesture to an intimate moment, from a monumental sculpture to a personal confession, from movement to song. In their new work, choreographer Ann Van den Broek and singer Gregory Frateur of Belgian band Dez Mona explore what they have in common, but also what drives them apart.

echo_re_echo
After a number of works for ensemble dancing, such as Joy Enjoy Joy (2022), Ohm (2023) and The Balancing Act (2023), echo_re_echo will again be a personal performance. It features Flemish-Dutch choreographer Ann Van den Broek herself alongside Gregory Frateur, performing artist and singer of Dez Mona, an Antwerp-based band playing alternative pop. Van den Broek and Frateur have been working together for much longer, including in Memory Loss (2021), which was nominated for a Zwaan.
In this new performance, they intensify their artistic and personal relationship. Where do their disciplines touch, where do they oppose or reinforce each other? Where does their work cross borders, when do art and life merge? How do they bridge the distance between music and dance, between two artists and two personalities? echo_re_echo is both a dance performance and a concert.
Van den Broek and Frateur are flanked by two dancers, echoing them as it were. Frateur is accompanied as a singer by Nicolas Rombouts, also a band member of Dez Mona, with (bass) guitar and synthesisers.

Van den Broek's choreographies are expressive, cinematic, personal and intense. She draws inspiration for her work from whatever moves or fascinates her at the time, obviously also fuelled by social developments; a mix of emotion and analysis.
Ann Van den Broek's work is internationally acclaimed and has twice been awarded a Zwaan for most impressive dance production: Co(te)lette (2008) and The Black Piece (2015). In 2022, she won the Performance Relay & Camera Rework Competition of dance film festival Cinedans with the film Memory Loss Inside.
Reviews
NRC Handelsblad on Memory Loss
'Her symbolism is as crisp as it is haunting, but without ever becoming tearful or sentimental. (...) Impressive and gripping movement theatre.'
