Larsen C

The title of Papadopoulos' new work is also the name of an Antarctic ice shelf more than 10,000 years old that is slowly crumbling. The movements of Larsen C are so slow that they cannot be observed. As if the tempo were absorbed by time and space.

Papadopoulos likes to be inspired by nature. In Elvedon, performed at Julidans 2017, they were the endless undulations of the ocean; in Ion (Julidans 2019) the movements of swarms of insects and birds, from which he zoomed out to ions, electrically charged atoms, one of the smallest levels of life. In his new performance Larsen C, he continues his research into minimal, seemingly everyday movements.

The choreographer explores the state of transition, from one movement to another. He wonders whether a small difference in a familiar rhythm, a trivial change in body movement, or even a slight shift in scenery, sound or light can completely alter our perception.

It is about the transitional phase between two roles, about the phase in which you are no longer one and not quite the other, the interim. The moment when you have left the old and are on the threshold of something new.

His dancers defy our perception as natural phenomena, very precisely constructed and yet elusive. With Larsen C, Papadopoulos deepens his research into the resilience of the individual in a group that he began in Elvedon and Ion. Now, more than ever, he challenges our perception with his organic language of movement and sometimes barely perceptible shifts that miraculously produce profound changes. A small change in dynamics can create a shock wave. It provides a hypnotic experience that invites reflection.
