Asset Liability & Equity

Connor Schumacher / ARK

Asset Liability & Equity is half Broadway show, half The Hunger Games – a physical arena in which beauty, talent and vulnerability are constantly deployed, defended or stripped.

In Asset Liability & Equity, choreographer Connor Schumacher brings five dancers and a flamboyant Master of Ceremony onto the stage for an absurd choreographic competition.

Asset Liability & Equity

Spearheaded by Schumacher himself in the guise of a sports commentator, a spectacle unfolds in which dancers perform a balancing act between collaboration and ruthless rivalry. The rules seem simple: keep what’s yours, take what’s theirs. But what are our assets? Talent, status, charisma? And what counts as a liability? Body, skin colour, gender?

As the dancers move through rounds of virtuosity and competition, the audience, too, becomes part of the game – cheering, judging and influencing.

The choreography alternates energetic group moments with intense solos, propelled by a tight musical composition that steadily increases the tempo.

-|-With humour, slapstick and an endless show of tricks, the performance lays bare the logic of our times. Who wins when everything counts, and what remains when the score is tallied?

Asset Liability & Equity makes you laugh. And then, somewhere in the midst of the compelling fun, it also makes you pause to ask: how much can you actually handle?

Connor Schumacher

Connor Schumacher is an American choreographer and performer who has been living and working in the Netherlands since 2012. His work explores the intersection of contemporary dance, performance and club culture. In 2020, he founded the ARK platform in Rotterdam, where choreography, participation and social interaction come together. In his projects, the boundary between stage and auditorium often blurs: dance emerges from the dynamics between people in the same space. In 2019, Schumacher received the Dutch Dance Days Award.
