Enchanting celebration of all those wonderful individuals who make up a community

Two intense corona years have made it clear that it is very necessary to look at the world and at being human in a different way. With more enchantment and more room for the rituals we have gradually lost touch with, perhaps? In the colourful performance Encantado, Brazilian choreographer Lia Rodrigues goes in search of rites and customs that we have unfortunately lost sight of.

Encantado

Encantado
(2021) by Lia Rodriguesthe sequel to Fúria, which will also be performed at Julidans was created during the corona crisis, which has hit Brazil hard. Encantado literally means enchanted, but also refers to the encantados, animated or magical beings that are connected to nature and can transform rocks, forests and rivers into sacred places. These mysterious natural forces, which are currently under threat, inspire her new performance.

-|-
Encantado is a tightly choreographed, associative dance performance. A carpet, woven from different fabrics, is slowly rolled out on stage, conjuring up a kaleidoscope of colours. Using colourful rags, the eleven dancers create icons, silhouettes, monsters and animals, almost like a child would draw them.

Comforting response

From the beginning of the corona crisis in March 2020, Centro de Artes da Maré, the headquarters of Rodrigues' dance company, was also the heart of the health service. At the same time, the roof of the centre underwent a metamorphosis with the installation of solar panels. All these realities - and many more - coexist in parallel and become tangible in the performance.

"Encantado is not a dance performance. It is a compelling experience of life, immersed on the border of these and other worlds. I saw. I felt. I lived 'encantado' - enchanted," writes Centro de Artes da Maré curator Pamela Carvalho about the performance.

-|-
"Encantado created a world in which the mermaids of fresh and salt water met the spirits of the forest, engaged into a dialogue with the black gays in a ballroom in Paris, I heard the songs of the Brazilian Pajelanças and the singing of the indigenous people of this land."

Encantado is an invitation to return to the natural sources of strength as well as a celebration of life and togetherness: all those amazing individuals who make up a fantastic community. A comforting response to the challenges of modern man.
