A clash of styles

The way we dance can never be completely separated from the way we live together. The southern Italian dance Pizzica, originally a wild dance to expel the deadly poison of a spider bite from the body, became a remedy for depression in times of poverty. The swinging Charleston emerged during the interwar period as a response to the strict pre-war etiquette. ICK takes inspiration from both dance forms for their new performance, a clash of styles.

-|-In Blasphemy Rhapsody - world premiere at Julidans - we follow the trail of an unknown virus. The performance was created in exceptional circumstances, with appropriate distance and from a pressing need to move. Dance and society interlock firmly: "We are the people." Blasphemy Rhapsody turns into a danced ritual, in which certainties are sacrificed. For nothing is more mobile than what we see as fixed. This dance is a call to embrace the mobility of life.

ICK

The International Choreographic Arts Centre is City Dance Company of Amsterdam, or ICK Dance Amsterdam for short. This platform for contemporary dance was founded in 2009 by choreographers Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten. They have been working together for more than 25 years in their search for a new dance language and a new approach to the body, in which the body in revolt and the mobility of certainties are the guiding principles.

-|-Pieter C. Scholten: "In our work, we look for the clash or a constructive friction. Where two worlds collide, there is fire, energy. Between brain and movement, between sacred and profane, mass and individual, paradoxes like these are the driving force of our work."
