What happens when discipline dissipates and uniformity shatters? In this physical and provocative opening performance of Julidans, choreographer Marco da Silva Ferreira explores how bodies are shaped by hierarchy and control – and how they resist it.
Eight dancers move on a raised stage, visible from all sides. What unfolds there constantly vacillates between tight formations and chaos, brute force and unexpected vulnerability. Choreography and music are energetic and complex, driven by collective movement.
The performance takes a sharp look at systems we recognise from the military, training and organisation: structures that direct, correct and standardise. Beneath that hard exterior, other layers emerge: care and dependence, fear and the desire for recognition. Toxic masculinity is not only manifest on the outside, but also erodes from within.-|-Here, dance stands in opposition to the system. What is often seen as free or undisciplined becomes a means of questioning power. At the same time, the performance acknowledges that discipline can also create bonds: as a driving force for solidarity and collective action. In glittering costumes and layered lighting – with nods to revolution and queer culture – the stage constantly shifts in meaning: arena, factory, church, gym. Structures waver, order shifts.
The question lingers: Are we shaped by the system, or are we building it ourselves?

Marco da Silva Ferreira
Marco da Silva Ferreira (1986) is a Portuguese choreographer with a background in urban and street dance, pop culture and the club scene. He is largely self-taught and made his breakthrough in 2010 after winning So You Think You Can Dance – Portugal. He subsequently worked with choreographers such as Hofesh Shechter, Tiago Guedes, Victor Hugo Pontes and Paulo Ribeiro.
In recent years, his works have included førma Inførma (2022), Fantasie Minor (2022) and C A R C A Ç A (2022), presented at Julidans 2023.
