In the world premiere After After, choreographer Arno Schuitemaker draws inspiration from a question posed by young Italian philosopher Federico Campagna: 'How can we help the creation of new worlds out of the ruins of our own?’ With seven dancers, he sets off from a white canvas to take a blistering plunge into the unknown.

After After

Playing in the background is the idea Campagna describes in his work: how each of the civilisations we have known so far – the Egyptian, the Greek, the Roman and so on – reached a climax each time, only to disintegrate. In Campagna's view, the world has arrived at the end point of neoliberal or capitalist society: there is no way out. In After After, Arno Schuitemaker does not focus on showing the ruins, but undertakes a search for how we can create new worlds.

With After After, which will have its world premiere at Julidans, Schuitemaker makes a case for the 'attempt'. "That we keep trying is vital. How might these new worlds appear? What could we draw in on a blank sheet? "His dancers form a diverse cast, bursting with energy and dynamism, in which everyone's individual strength is paramount. The stage is their playing space, their body is the instrument, their versatility is the key. A radically transformative set forms the surprising staging.

Schuitemaker is considered one of the most progressive makers of the moment. His work is praised for its hypnotic power and for the inventive forms he creates, which seem as intimate as they are universal. With successful performances such as The Way You Sound Tonight (awarded the 2019 Swan for most impressive dance production) and 30 appearances out of darkness (2022), he breaks down boundaries between dance, performance, visual art and club culture. Once again, he collaborates with renowned lighting designer Jean Kalman and with composer Aart Strootman, who created layered, electronic music especially for After After.
