Naked to the bone. Well, almost naked then: Brazilian performers Davi Pontes and Wallace Ferreira wear only a pair of trainers and Nike socks. With powerful steps and graceful poses, these two black men challenge you with their unbridled energy. Ample space for the body in its purest form, infused with power, humour and politics.

In the impressive Repertoire N.2, Pontes and Ferreira present an alternative to the structural and political violence in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro: dance as a form of self-defence. In a society where a black body is viewed with suspicion and always seen as potentially threatening, it appears that black lives still face racism in all its forms.

Incorporating influences from martial arts, capoeira and a critical interpretation of dance history, the choreography explores movements deeply rooted in black aesthetics. To a thumping beat, like an excited heartbeat, the performers stamp for survival, shaking off societal stigmas. With their dance, they want to make it clear: we are done with oppression. This far and no further.

Davi Pontes and Wallace Ferreira, with backgrounds in dance and visual arts, join forces for productions in which they explore the 'dissident black body'. As performers, they confront colonial, racial and hetero-normative frameworks that, as they show through their dance, are inherent to Western thinking. Repertoire N.2 is the second part of their Repertório trilogy.

Together, they have been creating works that explore their shared experiences and research related to dance and the Black dissident body.
