WORKSHOP GABRIEL SMEETS
Monday 10 July, 14:00 - 17:00
From concept to performance: the artistic process behind making a new work
This workshop for dance and theatre makers focuses on the artistic process. No doubt you are used to running into all kinds of obstacles while creating a new work. In the process from concept development to the final performance, a number of parameters are essential to consider. Do you, for example, want to use a storyline or not? Do you stick to your initial concept or do you allow yourself to be carried away by the spontaneity of the creative process? How can you use other media such as video or sound to reinforce the choreography? And how do the individual scenes come together and form a coherent piece?
GABRIEL SMEETS
Based on his own artistic practice and his collaboration with Jefta van Dinther for Unearth (to be seen in W139 during Julidans), Gabriel Smeets will address the essential questions that are important in the making process. He will elaborate on his own methods but above all, the workshop will provide space to discuss individual issues.-|-Gabriel Smeets studied art history and art journalism. From 2000 to 2006 he was dance editor at TM (Theatermaker). From 2006 to 2014 he was artistic director of the SNDO, the School for New Dance Development (AHK). From 2014 to 2022 he was artistic director of the Swedish Cullberg ballet. As a dramaturg, he created works with visual artist Marina Abramovic, fashion designer Aziz Bekkaoui, visual artist/choreographer Ibrahim Quraishi and currently with choreographer Jefta van Dinther.
